Shadows of Velan Prime, Chapter 1 (condensed)

Chapter 1: Beginnings

The Union outpost on Velan Prime died without warning.

Ancient ruins known as the Arkivum had stood undisturbed beneath the planet's mountains for centuries until an unidentified hostile force descended upon the colony. Within minutes, its defenses were destroyed. As explosions engulfed the command center, the outpost transmitted one final message.

"This is Velan Prime Outpost Command... We are under attack..."

The transmission dissolved into static.
Then silence.

As analysts at Galactic Union Fleet Command attempted to reconstruct the fragmented signal, they discovered something even more troubling. Deep beneath the planet's surface, an immense energy source had awakened. The signal originated within the Arkivum itself—an ancient structure rumored to predate every known civilization.

President Robert Pike and Admiral Joshua Campbell agreed that the crisis demanded more than a rescue mission. Whatever lay beneath Velan Prime represented a potential threat to the entire sector.

Only one ship possessed the combination of scientific capability, diplomatic experience, and military strength required for such an assignment.

The USS Coral Sea.

Admiral Eleanor Toprell contacted Captain Alexander Hawkins personally.

"Velan Prime has gone dark," she told him. "The colony is presumed lost. An unknown force attacked without warning, and the Arkivum has become active. Your mission is to investigate the colony, determine the source of the signal, rescue any survivors if possible, and contain whatever threatens the system."

Hawkins accepted without hesitation.

Within minutes, the Coral Sea altered course for Velan Prime.

The ship's senior staff assembled in the Flag Briefing Room.

Suspended above the conference table, a holographic image of Velan Prime rotated slowly while Commander Daniel McKnight outlined the tactical situation. No hostile ships remained in the system, but long-range sensors had detected intermittent energy pulses originating beneath the Arkivum. Engineering reported that the phenomenon interfered with transporter systems, forcing the mission to rely on shuttle insertions.
As the briefing continued, a powerful surge erupted beneath the ruins.

Commander Saereth Kahl immediately began analyzing the waveform while Engineering, Operations, Flight, Medical, and Tactical compared observations from their own disciplines.

The discussion led to an unsettling conclusion.
The signal was not random. It exhibited structure.

Lieutenant Commander Ethan Travers then discovered that the colony's final distress transmission carried the same hidden waveform. Something beneath the Arkivum had been active when the colony disappeared.

Captain Hawkins redirected the mission immediately. Science would analyze the signal. Engineering would determine its effects on ship systems. Operations would revise every insertion contingency. No one would enter the ruins until the unknown had been reduced as much as possible.

Only then did Hawkins dismiss the briefing.
One officer remained behind.

Major Thalisschar Shren requested a private meeting concerning Staff Sergeant Elisha Hawkins.

Alex refused immediately. "No."

Shren had expected the answer.

She calmly presented Elisha's service record, detailing years of subterranean reconnaissance, combat experience, confined-space rescue, and underground navigation. In her professional judgment, no Marine under her command was better qualified to lead the first reconnaissance team into the Arkivum.

"If he carried any other surname," she said quietly, "this wouldn't be a discussion."

Alex knew she was right.

After a long silence, he approved the assignment, reminding Shren that once the mission began, Elisha would be treated no differently than any other Marine.

Shren gave her word.

After she departed, Captain Hawkins remained alone in the briefing room.

The holographic image of Velan Prime continued its silent rotation above the conference table. One by one, he dismissed the tactical displays until only the planet remained.

From orbit, it appeared peaceful.

He had seen many worlds before first contact, before rescue operations, before battles.

They had all looked peaceful from orbit.

Reality always waited below.

His gaze settled on the amber marker identifying the Arkivum.

In two weeks, scientists, engineers, Marines, and explorers would descend into a place untouched for centuries.

Among them would be Staff Sergeant Elisha Hawkins.

Not because he was the captain's son.
Because he had earned his place.
Alex expanded the Arkivum beneath the holographic surface. A labyrinth of tunnels and chambers filled the air above the table before disappearing into unmapped darkness.
Somewhere below, something had survived the passing of ages.

Tomorrow, the Coral Sea would stop observing it from orbit.

Tomorrow, they would meet it.
